  • The Importance of Being Trivial May 2, 2012
Do you like the title of this article? I stole it from chapter 3 of The Art of Readable Writing by Rudolf Flesch. Back in the 40s and 50s, Flesch was hailed as the guru of clear, direct writing. His advice remains powerful and relevant today. When Flesch recommended being “trivial,” he meant you should […]

Social Media Networking

Social network marketing can be overwhelming.  As of this writing there are well over 350 different social networking sites in operation and the list grows every week.  ToSocial Media Marketing for small business complicate things further, there are different categories of social media sites, such as the hub sites FaceBook and MySpace, and of course Google has recently thrown its’ hat in the ring, again, in an attempt to challenge FaceBook.  The micro-blogging field includes sites like Twitter, Plurk, Publr and Identica to name a few. Throw in all of the Web 2.0 blog sites like HubPages, Squidoo, Blogger, WordPress.org and many others and you have a recipe for one giant headache when it comes to trying to develop a social media marketing plan.

Your Social Media Networking Advantage

The internet is supposed to be the great leveler of playing fields, but that’s not really the case. The larger corporations tend to have more resources, money, to throw at their online efforts and as such still wield an unfair advantage, to a degree. They have an economy of scale working for them;  if 5% of Proctor & Gamble’s customers participate in an social media based campaign, that’s a lot of people and a lot of money. If 5% of the average small business’ clientele do the same, none of those numbers will tend to be very large. Despite that fact, the abundant availability of online social tools, both free and paid versions, cries out for every small business to establish a social media policy to steer it to the next level of success.

Your Social Media Marketing Effort

Once a social media policy is in place, the next logical step is a social media marketing plan. One need not have a marketing degree to develop a beginning plan; simply appoint someone as your social media manager and task them with responsibility for all aspects of the social media management of your business’ plan. This will include clearly identifying the business’ online marketing goals, developing plan and tactics to be used in the social media campaigns and documenting everything clearly for any and all members of the social media team.  Everyone involved should be clear on the objectives and his or her responsibilities.

Your first social media campaign should employ very simple, attainable goals so that all team members can get their feet wet and experience success. Subsequent campaigns can add levels of complexity, secondary objectives, and loftier goals as the team gains valuable experience.
