  • The Importance of Being Trivial May 2, 2012
Do you like the title of this article? I stole it from chapter 3 of The Art of Readable Writing by Rudolf Flesch. Back in the 40s and 50s, Flesch was hailed as the guru of clear, direct writing. His advice remains powerful and relevant today. When Flesch recommended being “trivial,” he meant you should […]

Social Media Marketing Drive Business with a Solid Plan

Social Media Marketing

Devising a social media marketing plan for your business requires the same consideration, attention and energy that you would give to any other facet of your business.

Before you dive in head first registering accounts, creating profiles and posting content across the spectrum of social media sites available on the web, take the time to create a solid social media marketing plan so that you can define and effectively target your audience through social networking.

Get started on your social media marketing plan by asking yourself:

  • What are the needs of my business and will social networking address these needs?
  • What is my goal in using social media? To market new products? To find new customers? To recruit new employees?
  • Who is my audience? Will I be able to reach them via social networking? What is the best way to target my niche audience?

Your answers to these questions will help you in formulating a social media marketing plan that is unique to your particular business and needs.

Once you defined the needs of your business and the goals you wish to meet with social media, the next step in developing your social media marketing plan is to decide which social networking sites you’re going to use.

In order to effectively leverage the power that social media holds, it’s important to look at all the tools and methods available to your business. As each social networking site serves a different purpose, you may need to spend some time researching different networking sites. You should be familiar with their terms of service, how they work, what audiences they target and where they rank on the social media ladder.

For example, if you own a bakery, you may find posting pictures of your creations on Facebook and Flickr will encourage customers to stop in and buy cupcakes, while creating a podcast that talks about baking may not drive traffic to your store. However, if you own a financial advising firm, you may find that creating a blog or podcast offering advice on how to save money and pay off debt will serve your customers better than a Tweet about a money-saving deal or a photo on Flickr of your office.

Your social media marketing plan should outline the value you provide to your customers and what channels you can better provide that value through.

  • Will you utilize micro-blogging sites like Twitter to make daily updates?
    • Will your business be represented on Facebook?
    • Will you encourage your employees to network on LinkedIn?
    • Will you have a company blog on WordPress or a similar platform?
    • Are you going to post videos on Youtube or share photos on Flickr?
    • Are podcasts relative to your business?

Your social media marketing plan should also identify who or what department will be responsible for creating, updating and monitoring content. This is an important part of your social media plan as content should be fresh, engaging and appropriate.

Finally, leave some wiggle room in your social media marketing plan. While social media is an effective method of advertising and promotion, it will not give you instant results. Patience, persistence, flexibility and creativity are all absolute musts when utilizing social media for business.
