  • The Importance of Being Trivial May 2, 2012
Do you like the title of this article? I stole it from chapter 3 of The Art of Readable Writing by Rudolf Flesch. Back in the 40s and 50s, Flesch was hailed as the guru of clear, direct writing. His advice remains powerful and relevant today. When Flesch recommended being “trivial,” he meant you should […]

Social Media Campaign

So you’ve set aside a budget for your social media campaign, got your employees on board and checked out all the different social networking sites that you think will work best with your business model, good for you!  So what’s your next step and how can you achieve success through social media marketing?

There are several different ways to go about launching your social media campaign. Depending on your budget, the size of your organization and who is handling your social media campaign, your options may vary. You may decide to start out slow, or go full blast when it comes to launching your campaign. Regardless of your method, the following suggestions will aid you in your quest to launching a successful social media campaign.

Talk to your Customers

Find out what your customers are doing and how they use social media in their everyday lives when it comes to services that they buy or use. Are they looking for coupons or special deals? Perhaps they are interested in learning more about your business, employees and work you do in the community. How do you find out? Ask!

Look at your competition

Check out your competition online and look at the social media activities they are participating in. If they are tweeting (and even if they aren’t) you should be, too. Does your competition engage customers through their social media? If so, how and is it working for them? What can you do different?

Provide Topical & ‘Buzz-Worthy’ Content

The internet is full of content, so providing your customers buzz-worthy, interesting and engaging content is one of the best ways to get their attention. Don’t just talk about facts; set yourself apart by providing customers content that they will have an emotional response to.

Actively Participate in Trends

Instead of trying to create your own trends, participate or ‘piggyback’ on existing trends and hot topics. Utilize the tools that are available to you and relevant to your message.  Tools like the ‘trending topics’ resource on Twitter or the ‘Google Trends’ tool is an easy way to monitor and discover trends that are popular on the internet.

Don’t Spam!

Social media users are very savvy when it comes to spotting spam-like content. Instead of just trying to sell your brand or business services on the internet, focus more on the value you provide to your customers. If you’re customer feels like you are targeting them simply to make a sale, they will more than likely ignore any informative and engaging message you may have to say. Strike a healthy balance between engaging and selling.

Do your Research

Social media is a wonderful marketing tool because it allows you to target your niche market much more effectively than other marketing methods like direct mail. Resources and tools like Facebook and LinkedIn Ad’s allows you to target and only appeal to your audience based on the demographics you provide. In order to target your market effectively, you have to know who they are! Research your market for social media as you would any other marketing method for your business.

Finally, remember that your social media campaign is simply one weapon in your marketing arsenal. Most social media campaigns are successful because they are used in conjunction with other marketing efforts. Don’t put all your marketing eggs in one basket; use your social media campaign as another marketing means to an end.
